Connecting to ourselves and others through horses

It’s often difficult to stay ‘present’ in today’s bustling world. Unpleasant situations can interrupt our capacity to exist moment-to-moment. Working with horses can foster that mindfulness we sometimes lack as we interact with the animals in real time.

At Heart of the Horse Ranch, we provide a unique form of equine-facilitated psychotherapy with an emphasis on compassion and trust. The continuum of this process leads to personal growth and self-awareness. Here, you will find people of all walks of life smiling, overcoming challenges, and forming bonds with our horses that go beyond just riding in the saddle. We have an inviting, judgment-free atmosphere.

Message from our Founder

“There is something so powerful about the simplicity in sitting still with this 1,300 pound animal. And the second you find that moment of stillness inside of you, the horse knows. The horse will reinforce that in its own way, and says, “Hey, this is how you are supposed to be. This is the place you’re supposed to make decisions from. From your heart.”

Why us?

“Finding Heart of the Horse has been the one therapy that our son could connect with both himself, David, and the horses. Over the past year, our son has learned to trust himself and his abilities - and to trust in learning the intimate relationship with the horses. With that lesson has come the understanding and necessity of self-reliance, self-care, self-forgiveness, and most importantly, his will to live. This mother can not possibly put her gratitude into words.”

“I believe the hour a week I spend with Heart of the Horse is perhaps the most helpful of my regimen. I greatly look forward to my Wednesday appointment with great anticipation each week. I spend time grooming the horses, talking to them and then riding. My tremors are greatly reduced during this hour and for hours thereafter. My anxiety is greatly reduced during these hours as well. I can smile after these sessions.”

“I have been able to learn tools to help myself and find moments of peace where before I would drown myself in work and extra-curricular activities to avoid my own thoughts. Working with the horses and David these last two years was the only way I was able to find that peace and strength to face those thoughts. Now I don't avoid the thoughts, and I welcome the silence so that I can continue to work on myself.”

“David has given us a safe place to be on his ranch. We are welcome anytime to snuggle horses, sit quietly or run free. This was a life saver during the pandemic. The gift given to my children has changed me, too. Seeing them thrive, learn and open up gives me hope.”
