The Brendan McKay Scholarship
Brendan McKay and I envisioned Heart of the Horse a decade ago while on vacation together in Colorado. Both of us were 5 years sober, and felt compelled to offer help to other strugglers. Brendan was my best friend, a soul mate. He was infectiously funny, and bafflingly intelligent. His presence was larger than life.
Created with the intention of making critical mental health services more accessible to those in need, the Brendan McKay Discovery Scholarship has been helping members of the Tucson community since 2015. Recipients are asked to contribute what they can. If that is not possible, recipients in need of these services will not be charged. Equine therapy is the modality by which counseling will be delivered unless otherwise indicated. Families and individuals alike are welcome.
The Heart of the Horse and Sequoia Springs Trauma Healing Center have partnered to provide multidimensional healing and treatment to individuals, couples, and families in the greater Tucson, AZ area. A generous gift endowed by Bernie and Mary McKay has given us the honor to pass on hope and guidance to those who need it most, just as Brendan instilled hope, light, and love in whoever was lucky enough to meet him.
